A multitude of factors can make a call more complex. Emergency situations often occur in environments that are not easily navigable — patients are found in very small bathrooms, kitchens or living rooms impeded by furniture. For this reason, we have developed Realistic Training Vignettes (RTVs) to help students learn to face challenges that arise in real life situations.
The RTVs consist of movable walls, props, realistic graphics and scenery, forming virtual emergency scenes that may occur in a person's home. Before each session, instructors choose and create the virtual call scene, often placing the Advanced Training Mannequin in the scenario. While performing, students learn that sometimes, it is necessary to move furniture or other obstacles to reach a patient. They learn how to use the right combination of strength and delicacy in tight, confined spaces in order to treat and safely transport the patient to the ambulance.
The ultimate goal of the RTVs is to train students to minimize the amount of time from when they arrive on the scene until the patient is treated and in transit to the hospital. It is an opportunity for students to learn from mistakes without detriment to a patient.
